BAEYER VILLIGER OXIDATION

BAEYER - VILLIGER OXIDATION:

                                                                                                     THIS  REACTION INVOLVES THE OXIDATION OF KETONES TO ESTER BY MEANS OF PERACIDS  .
FOR  EXAMPLE:::::::

 R-COO-R' + C6H5-COO-O-H   ------------------>  R-C-OR' + C6H5COOH

HOWEVER, CYCLIC KETONES YIELD KETONES ..

IN THE BAEYER - VILLIGER OXIDATION,THE BEST OXIDISING AGENT IS PEROXYTRIFLUORO ACETIC ACID WHILE THE OTHER IMPORTANT  PEROXY DERIVATIVE USED FOR THE PURPOSE ARE PERMONO SULPHURIC ACID (CARO' S ACID), PERBENZOIC ACID , PERACETIC ACID  ,  BF3-H2O , ETC.

THE OVERALL REACTION HAS BEEN AN INSERTION OF OXYGEN ATOM ATOMBETWEEN THE ARBONYL GROUP AND THE ADJACENT CARBON IN THE KETONE . ORGANIC SI=OLVENTS WHICH ARE INERT UNDER THE CONDITIONS OF REACTION MAY BE USED . THE CHOICE OF SOLVENTS DEPENDS UPON THE SOLUBILITY OF THE REACTANTS .COMMONLY USED SOLVENTS ARE GLACIAL ACETIC ACID AND  CHLOROFORM>>>>>>
